The Best Vampire/Paranormal Movies Ever

The past few days have been pretty typical for autumn in New York...rain, rain, rain! I love the beautiful fall foliage and the hint of Halloween decorations in apartment windows, but the rain is sometimes overwhelming. All I want to do on a cool, overcast day is curl up with some extra salty popcorn, a few friends and lots of great sci-fi flicks. So, with the added bonus of delaying laundry duty, I decided to make a list of the top ten vampire/paranormal movies ever!

1. Harry Potter

You are probably at the wrong blog if I need to explain this movie to you! I love Harry, Ron, Hermione, the whole gang, and I am so sad that not only are the books done, but the movies are too. The last one was epic and this series is perfect for a multi-day movie marathon!

2. Twilight

Again, if you like vampires and paranormal romance, you would must have been living under a rock to not know about 'Twilight'. Despite the sometimes awkward acting, I have a soft spot for Bella, Edward and Jacob...the love triangle that started it all!

3. Underworld

Kate Beckinsale plays Selene, the uber bad-ass vampire who falls in love with, well, I don't want to spoil it, but let's just say she falls for the absolute worst person possible. There's lots of action, lots of gore and lots of steamy love scenes...basically, everything you could possibly want in a vampire movie! And, there's a prequel coming out this January! You can watch the trailer here.

4. The Covenant

Four gorgeous boys with magical powers...amazing! The story line is very dark, laced with romance, ancient legacies and the resurfacing of long forgotten evil forces. A really great movie, and for any 'Gossip Girl' lovers, this is one of Chace Crawford's earlier films.

5. The Craft

A 90s scary movie at its finest! A new girl moves in and joins up with three girls who practice witchcraft, but things unravel fast and become disturbing pretty quickly. I definitely don't recommend watching this alone unless you have a night light handy!

6. Blood & Chocolate

An ancient werewolf pack still practices some pretty gruesome rituals (like eating an unsuspecting human once a month!), but the princess of the pack decides to rebel. I love the movie on its own, but it started out as a great book - warning, the two plot lines are both fabulous but almost nothing alike.

7. Splash

Something you should know about me: Ariel is my favorite Disney princess of ALL time! I love mermaids (I really want to write a book about them someday) and this Tom Hanks comedy is a fantastic movie about a mermaid who finds herself stranded at shore. The movie 'Aquamarine' is a really fun, modern, teeny bopper version of this movie.

8. Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Before there was Sarah Michelle Gellar (and the best TV series of all time!), there was this 1992 cult classic! The snappy comments are still just as witty and the story line is different enough to still be exciting. In fact, the TV series is supposed to take place directly following the end of this movie, so it acts sort of like a prequel!

9. Beastly

Again, I'm a sucker for anything Disney related, and I love this modern spin on 'Beauty and the Beast.' The movie is set in NY and Mary-Kate Olsen makes an appearance...clearly, you must see it! Alex Pettyfer did a great job looking ugly and sexy at the same time, and also starred I Am Number Four last year, which I didn't love as much but is still paranormal.

10. Jumper

David has the power to teleport, and somebody wants to kill him for it! I thought the movie was fun, the action exciting and the scenery gorgeous. Added bonus: Hayden Christensen in a post Star Wars sci-fi movie.

Honorable Mentions: Ever After (okay...not paranormal, but one of my all-time favorite movies, and it is based off of a fairytale!), Charlie St. Cloud (great ghost story that just missed my list), Interview with a Vampire (a vampire classic, but it's geared towards an older crowd), Tuck Everlasting (love this movie, but it's not quite paranormal), Queen of the Damned (super super dark so I don't watch it too often).

Coming Soon...but not soon enough!: Breaking Dawn (!!), Vampire Academy,  Snow White and the Huntsman.

Do any of you have movies to add to the list?? I'm always looking for more great paranormal flicks!

  1. I enjoy all of these except Twilight. It is something you can have for the colelction's sake, but a very dry and boring lead. Underworld and Harry Potter would top my list out of these. The others are decent. They would rank 5 or more stars out of ten for me.
